It all started when…

in March 2021 I tweeted out to the world asking,

“Are there many Latinx peeps working in Northern institutions who follow me? Whether you're in STS or not. I'm curious about (y)our experiences and feelings of disconnection from/longing for the South. D'you have 'em? Other relations w/ LatAm? Networks w/ LatAm?”

It started a wonderful thread of conversations with various Latinx scholars working in the global North. With Andrea Ballestero’s support, the first Cafézim was born: an informal hour-long conversation about living in the borderlands of Latinidade (widely conceived––we affirm at the start of every meeting that we are not a monolith) and residing in countries of the global North (the majority of us in the United States).

Since, I have been organizing Cafézims with relative consistency (at least every couple of months) with a variety of themes. From summer schedules to return-to-school, to colonial and imperial tendencies in academic publishing. To learn more, look for the #Cafézim hashtag on twitter, or reach out!
